The Essence of Leadership

I ran across this post and thought it was worth sharing. The essence of leadership. Presidential scholar George Edwards argues. "The essence of leadership is not persuasion. Real leadership is recognizing and exploiting opportunities," The context for this piece is about President Barack Obama's negotiating skills but I think the idea is worth contemplating in and of itself.

  1. I am facilitating training for faculty who have recently assumed the role as department chair. One of the system leaders gave a presentation on leadership that rekindled my lifelong interest in this subject. I was remembering the great conversations that I had about the concepts in the book "Good to Great" and ran across Jim Collins' website. The "First Who then What" concept is one of my favorites. This link will take you to his explanation of this and other concepts in the book. What do you think? http://www.jimcollins.com/media_topics/first-who.html
